Isabel’s father began sexually abusing her when she was 6 years old. For the next 11 years, she endured his unrelenting assaults out of fear of separating her family. Isabel has a little brother and could not bear the thought of taking his father away from him. Finally, at age 17, she couldn’t take it anymore and made an outcry to her teacher. Her father immediately fled to Mexico to evade authorities. Her mother was not initially supportive, and Isabel felt a tremendous amount of guilt for breaking her family apart.
Despite these obstacles, and because of the expert team at DCAC, Isabel and her family have been able to experience dramatic healing. Isabel became a dedicated and enthusiastic therapy client. She came to her weekly session diligently for one year to address the crippling PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) symptoms she experienced. Her mom also began attending therapy sessions with other moms who had struggled to support their children at the time of their initial outcry of abuse. Through group work, Isabel’s mom became a fierce advocate and protector of her daughter, creating the safe and nurturing home environment she’d been missing for so many years.
Today, Isabel is thriving. She is a college sophomore and lives on campus and excels in her classes. Isabel is a shining example of how evidence-based therapy practices employed at DCAC provide real-time healing with lasting impact.
On behalf of DCAC clients, including Isabel, thank you for being a part this work.
