Explain your position with DCAC:
As a Forensic Interviewer, I provide the child with an opportunity to tell their story and truly listen to them. Previously, investigations had so many different disciplines when talking to the child about what happened to them. This can be both detrimental to the case and difficult for someone having to tell their story over and over. As a forensic interviewer, I am trained to ask questions in a non-leading, non-threatening manner, regarding all allegations of abuse or witnessing any type of crime. I conduct these interviews in this manner to help reduce the revictimization of the child and remove barriers to the investigation.
What led you to work at DCAC:
I always knew I wanted to make a difference in the world and help people, but I didn’t know-how. On a whim, I applied for a forensic interviewer position in Midland, Texas where I worked for two years, and it was then that I realized I’d finally found something I felt was resolute in making a difference (in a way I felt very proud of). After two years, I was referred to DCAC and relocated to Dallas, where I have now been interviewing for over 6 years and I’ve never looked back.
Tell me about someone who has influenced you or a mentor who has helped you the most in your career:
My mom and I, (that may seem narcissistic, but hear me out). My mom is my biggest supporter and has always been there for me when I needed her most, she is who I go to when I’ve had a rough day, needed someone to talk to and she is my favorite person to ask for advice from. Most people think she gives a biased opinion because she is my mother, but that’s what makes her the best because no matter what, she is honest. My mother is a tough woman and through many conversations, she has given me the drive and motivation to do better for the kids we serve at DCAC. At the end of the day, we each must want it and CHOOSE to fight to make the world a better place. There are many people in my life that have pushed me to be better; my mom, my wife, previous bosses, team members (Partners & FI), and they each play a special part that makes the job better and helps me improve. However, at the end of the day, I must choose to push myself to do the best work I can to help these children.
How do you enjoy spending your time when you are not working:
I enjoy long walks on the beach with a glass of wine or whiskey. When I’m not staring into the sunset with my wife, a leisurely swim through the magnificent Lake Minnetonka always provides clarity after a long day. However, for those wintery months, a casual ice skate across White Rock Lake will always bring warmth to my heart.
What is one thing you are most proud of about your job:
I am proud of the work we do as a whole, providing healing and justice for children and their non-offending care providers. The days are not easy, but knowing I’m trying really helps.
