The start of October brings lots of fun conversations around costumes and candy for Halloween. We encourage you to make space among those conversations to discuss a few safety tips to ensure that everyone has a safe and fun time this spooky season.
- Stay in groups with at least one adult walking with the group.
- It may be tempting to drive along and watch, but an adult being present with the kids will allow you to step in immediately if anything happens.
- Make sure costumes fit properly to avoid tripping.
- Examine all candy before eating.
- If something looks homemade or isn’t sealed appropriately, toss it.
- Avoid dark houses.
- Always trust your gut.
- If you have a bad feeling about a particular house, neighborhood, or large rowdy group, TRUST YOUR GUT!
- Stay visible.
- Use flashlights or glowsticks to stay visible when it gets dark outside.
- Look both ways before crossing any street.
- It can be easy to forget when the excitement of trick-or-treating sets in. Remind your child to always look both ways before crossing the street.
- Drive cautiously and watch out for pedestrians.
- Even if you aren’t taking your child trick-or-treating, you still have a part to play in ensuring that all children are safe. Drive slowly, keep your eyes peeled, and roll your window down so you can hear children when they might be preparing to cross the street.
We hope you all have a wonderful Halloween!
