The Art: "The Favorite" Donor Name: Altermann Galleries Artist Name: Ed Hlavka Date of completion: 1987 Materials: Bronze Size: 13 1/2" Artist Bio: A native of South Dakota, Hlavka developed an early passion and natural ability for sculpture. While still in grade school his work was included in the “South Dakota Outstanding Young Artists Traveling Exhibition”. As a teenager, he toured Italy and was influenced by the works of the Renaissance masters. After attending the College of Art and Design in Minneapolis, he continued to hone his skills with various classes and workshops including a study of portrait and figurative realism under the direction of Martine Vaugel, a noted sculptor in France. Hlavka’s work has been exhibited at prestigious national shows including the National Sculpture Society’s “Masquerade Exhibition” at the Tower of the Americas in New York and Cheyenne’s Old West Museum Show, for which he received the “Gallery’s Choice” award. Other awards include a Members and Associated Award from Allied Artist of America. His work can be found in galleries and private collections across the nation. Hlavka’s most recent commissions for life-size and heroic bronzes include: President George H. Bush, President Thomas Jefferson, Colonel Sturgis mounted on his horse, Christ with two children, and the Sundance Kid. All life-size works to be completed in the next year. Hlavka is one or the newest professional members to be elected to the National Sculpture Society. Often called one of the country’s most prolific sculptors, Hlavka’s work ranges from Wildlife to Western to Portraiture, though he is best known for his ability to bring a smile to the viewers face with the whimsical portrayal of the characters he creates.
